A Family Day Out in the Beaujolais region

There are places that seem made for slowing down, taking a breath, and reconnecting with yourself. Beaujolais is one of them. Just a few kilometers from Lyon, less than a 45-minute drive away, this region offers the perfect setting for a family getaway, with rolling hills, golden-stone villages, and culinary delights (wine and fine dining). In this article, discover how to enjoy a family day out in the Beaujolais region, whether you’re starting from Lyon or heading straight to Beaujolais.

Are you spending a few days in Lyon and wondering whether to visit wineries with your children? You’re absolutely right to consider it! Beaujolais is full of small, authentic estates producing quality wines. But before planning this day, here are a few tips to follow so that everyone—young and old—can enjoy the experience to the fullest, each in their own way.

  1. Plan a well-structured day to keep everyone engaged

Although the Beaujolais wine region is right next to the city of Lyon, you’ll need a car to explore it. It takes about 35 to 45 minutes by car from Lyon to reach the first wineries and start a family day out in Beaujolais. Pacing is key to keeping your little ones focused and energized. You know them better than anyone, so when planning and organizing your family day in Beaujolais, make sure each visit or lunch doesn’t go on too long. If you start your first visit at 11:00 a.m., plan to leave Lyon at 10:00 a.m. to account for any unexpected stops and even allow time for a photo at one of the Beaujolais viewpoints (see our article on this topic). Another tip? Book your restaurant first! The dining options in the Beaujolais aren’t as extensive as in Lyon, and the best restaurants fill up fast.

  2. Choose fun activities that everyone—young and old—will enjoy

To truly enjoy a tour and tasting at a winery, every participant needs to be engaged and captivated by what they’re experiencing. So opt for wineries with open spaces, games in the courtyard, or even better: choose wineries that offer activities specifically for children! Treasure hunts, grape juice and chocolate tastings, bike rides, or rides in a Citroën 2CV, etc. Anything is possible, but you’ll need to do a lot of research before your visit.

  3. Find wineries that welcome families

The Beaujolais region is still underrated compared to Burgundy or the Rhône Valley. Yet it’s full of hidden gem wineries at prices that are still affordable. Your goal will be to find a winery that opens its doors to the public (which is quite common in Beaujolais) and also offers activities for children. Another option is to contact an agency specializing in organizing custom private tours, such as Beaujolais Wine Experiences. Thomas will be happy to design a day tailored to your preferences and schedule, ensuring the whole family has a great time.
